I can't remember the last time I opened a book that wasn't related to school, but this Spring Break I'm doing some recreational reading.
Courtesy of Dr. Wiggan ;-) I'm reading "How Europe Underdeveloped Africa" by Walter Rodney. He lent me the book after a riveting conversation we had on colonialism/developing economies/Montego Bay...
I've always felt that the British screwed us over when they gave us our independence; leaving a power vacuum and zero infrastructure. But I didn't realize the impact that European imperialism had on Africa and the Caribbean until I got done with the first chapter of this book!

2) During war, all pretentions towards civilization go out the windows. Extremely nasty things are done on and off the battle field. How about the settlers and innocent people the Mau Mau butchered? Shouldn't they apologize too?

1)While an apology may not seem like much, it would be a giant leap for people who have refused to take responsibility for the systematic abuse and torture of thousande of people.
2)I agree with you; the Mau Mau aren't blameless. So when evaluating what happened, I think we should look to the nobleness of each sides cause. The Mau Mau were fighting for their freedom and their land...what were the British fighting for? The expansion of the Empire?
I think asking for a apology from either side is pointless. Unless personally you will fall asleep easier every night knowing the british are "sorry" for what they did. Through multinational companies and strong ties to senior government officials they still run our country- without financial aid our economy would be crippled.As much as I am angered by the way they the british empire handled affairs pre- dec 1963, with their depature they left us in shambles from tribalism, neo-colonialism, corruption

Burying the past and ignoring what happened is cowardly and shameful. An official apology would mean they acknowledged what went on. And yes, that would help me sleep better...and I'm sure other detainees too.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not a son, relative or beneficiary of some colonial master or Cecil Rhodes for that matter:
As much as we have condemned the Colonial powers (Belgium, France, Spain, Germany and Britain)...we ought to sit back and res evaluate the possibilities of the lack of colonialism. I'm not going to speculate much on what autocracies they carried in Africa and all the other places but let's be practical. I have read Rodney's book, very insightful ( I recommend Wretched of the Earth by Fanon) but fails to put the current situation of Africa in context. After many colonial powers "moved" out of Africa, most or many economies either collapsed or started deteriorating. Look at Kenya (since all of is have lived there). Look at the structures that the British built on that land (part with our resources and partly with their share). We still use a building built by the British as our parliament, High courts, the railway system, the ministries, JKIA and Wilson airports were initiatives of Britons, the roads and sewer systems are the SAME ones that the Britons left behind. While we are so engulfed with such brainwash and assimilation, we have not taken any step to correct the problem, be independent and do our own, our way , our style. Kenya has not progressed in any way better than a country that is not currently colonized. I will give you three parallels - Look at Ethiopia, dubbed as one of the few nations that was never colonized, where are they now...much worse than Kenya. Look at Kenya, on the decline even with our 100% sovereignty. South Africa is a classic example how imperialism was good for Africa. Besides the moral issues as apartheid, that country was built from the ground up by the Europeans and still is being and that's why they are much ahead of all African countries. If you are a believer that Capitalism is indeed the solution to many of the problems in Africa, then you must jump on board with me to agree that in many forms, colonialism was a blessing to Africa. I can be able to fluently write and speak (so I hope) the queen's language, I did not have to take some extra classes to stay at par with many people in the world. Plus remember I do have a great preserve of my own culture, invoked at my will. There are social injustices that were instituted by colonial powers (in my opinion especially by Belgium and France) in which the assimilation process was to strip people off their identities. Belgium is even worse off because they set stage for some of the worst crimes of making in Africa, The Rwanda Genocide (a result of Belgians alienated of Tutsis and Hutu) , in Congo - you guys have read what Happened there ( recommend the movie Lumumba). We sit and pretend that we hate the west, look at the influx of Kenyans to the west, some of whom have openly abandoned their homes and families. Worse of you hear many Kenyans criticize their new homes ( US or UK) so much that they hate but still cant move. I have not even mentioned the new culture in which many Kenyans are embracing western ways depicted on TV and media...open for more discussions.
Currently, a typical African country has a 40% rate of return on investment both foreign or domestic and the fastest growing economy if certain things are put in place.
